Dead... dead .... dead
1 out of 5 stars.
This was never a great machine - the software was clunky and it could take a while to find stations, but I could have lived with that - however after about 18 months it seems to have died. The power is still working but nothing happens - the lights are (literally) on, but no one is home. This does seem to be a fairly persistent issue with many of the internet radios but it isn't acceptable with a relatively expensive piece of kit.

One year on

I have had an AE radio for a little over one year. I bought it in the UK to listen to UK radio from South America. After buying it I tried setting it up in the UK using a BT HomeHub but couldn't get it to work - but I think that problem has since been resolved. In S America I had no problem connecting to WEP protocol router. It works well and sound quality is good. I haven't used it for podcasts or as an alarm clock. We have a lot of power outages and the radio resets itself OK once the current comes back on. The radio tunes into the last played station if the current goes while it is playing. Once it got stuck on the initialising process (reported in another review). I unplugged the radio for about an hour and reset the router and then plugged in the radio and it was OK. Only happened once. Masses of stations. For me its a great lifeline!

A waste of time looking back

I've battled on with mine for 16 months. Sound quality OK but user interface hopeless. I got fed-up with the super bright display so upgraded the firmware and got the well documented background crackle in return. It always spent a lot of time buffering recently. My wi-fi network has been down for a few days so went back to using an old Sony hand-held radio on MW and suddenly realised how much better it sounds. No buffering, no inability to listen to football commentary on 5 live, Sound certainly the equal of AE unit.

I decided to spend dedicate some time to it today to try and improve my user experience, and try and get the 'Reciva' configured correctly. This required me to power it down...which I did and now it is DEAD. Great! Out of warranty. Is it the transformer or the unit? Should I throw it in the bin?

Really, unless you want to listen to stations unobtainable on FM and MW, then I'd wait a few years and see what comes along. AE seems to have washed their hands of the model and just direct you to Reciva website. You can't even download a user manual from their site, so I had to go in the loft to find mine. Just not worth the trouble.

We love ours

We bought an early AE17 in December 2006, and since then have used it every day at our homes in USA, Czech Republic and now the UK. The only fault we have had in that time was that the external transformer failed - easily replaced with a standard unit via Amazon. The single-line display (which scrolls so you can see the whole line) is a bit of a pain, as is the rotary multi-function knob, which means you have to cycle through a long list of stations before you find the one you're looking for. And, of course, it's mono unless you attach external speakers. American stations can be difficult to find because you don't know the four-letter code (eg WNYC) which many are listed by rather than their commercial name.

On the pro side, the unit is easy to set up and has relatively good reception range. My mother and my aunt (who lives in South Africa), both in their 60's, recently bought one each on our recommendation, and also love theirs. Both needed a little help with the set-up, but once that was done were able to use it fully.

Satisfied the requirements
4 out of 5 stars.
This WiFi radio satisfied my requirements namely to listen a selection of English and Dutch internet radio stations. It was not supplied with a manual probably because it was secondhand. Even so the setting up was easy to achieve. It does not have a battery but unplugging and re-plugging is not a problem - the station and volume are resumed on power on.
I have upgraded the firmware without difficulty and the functionality has been enhanced with regard to the alarms and menu's.
